NaBloPoMo Day 7 - Date Night

Okay, I admittedly think it's kind of annoying when married couples go out to dinner together or do something fun together and call it "date night." You're with each other all the time, you have tons of meals together, why is one a date night and one isn't? Because you shaved your legs? Probably, actually.

Moving on.

Mike and I decided since we are currently (and probably going to be forever??) baby-less, that we should go on more dates. Basically, we need to get out of the damn house more. So we signed up for a cooking class at this local catering company/kitchen store that we love so much and they sell that most amazing $8 bloody mary mix holy man that stuff is good - Quality Street Catering.

We took the Brunch Menu class taught by the chef at our favorite local restaurant, CD Cafe. I was admittedly pleasantly surprised to find out that we weren't going to actually cook anything. We were given copies of the recipes and watched the chef prepare and explain everything while we drank wine and joked the whole time. And then we got to eat what he prepared. I mean, that's my kind of class!

Here's what he made:

Southern Maryland Style Eggs Benedict with Lump Crab, Ham & Old Bay Hollandaise
Okay, so the presentation on this one is ugly, but it was delicious. I have only made hollandaise once and I followed a recipe that used a blender and it ended up cold and messy and I hated making it. He made his the old school way and it was delicious and oh man why am I always so impressed watching people poach eggs?!

Fresh Strawberry Shortcake & Chantilly Cream
I am making this chantilly cream and I am putting it on everything.

Poached Salmon with Lemon Caper Aioli
This was by far the best dish of the night. Why have I never poached fish? Yum yum yummer face, this was good.

Bacon Potato Casserole
So he thickened up the casserole with a roux and it made it even richer and just damn yummy. I honestly didn't know you could put a roux in a casserole.  Is that sad?

Spicy Sausage Fritatta
Okay, ugly presentation again, tasty ass fritattta.  Just effing tasty.  The end.

If you live in my area, definitely sign up for one of their cooking classes! It's fun, tasty, and booozy. Which really is the best kind of class, right?
Also, if anyone wants recipes, just let me know and I'll send them your way!

NaBloPoMo Day 6 - Today

Today

I haven't washed my hair since Sunday

and

I'm wearing shoes that are probably not entirely work appropriate.
But they are soft and comfy and warm and make me feel like I'm wearing slippers at home and am happy which I'm not really, but they help me pretend.

So,

That's what I've got going on.

How are you guys?

NaBloPoMo Day 5 - Cool Chick with a Cool Job

Lately I’ve been kind of obsessed with figuring out “what I want to be when I grow up” and with the idea of whether or not everyone just hates their jobs and does them anyways. Do some of you wake up in the morning excited to go to work? Is that a thing? Mike and I sit and talk over and over again trying to figure out what path to place ourselves on for the future. And it’s hard. Is money more important or happiness? Is there a way to find a creative job where you won’t be completely stifled at every step? Does anyone actually like their job?!

I tell you, I’ve been obsessed with these thoughts. So I decided to talk to some ladies I know that actually do seem to like their jobs; a lot of whom branched out on their own and started their own businesses. Maybe they’ll inspire me to figure the eff out what I’m doing with my life. Or maybe they’ll hire me?  Wink wink

Our first “Cool Chick with a Cool Job” is Shannon from Flourish who did the flowers at my wedding. She’s been in the flower business for over 23 years and has been widely successful…for good reason…the lady rocks and is super nice to boot. On top of her flourishing (get it hehe) floral business, Shannon also recently started a web site called Fancy Pants Weddings that is filled with amazing wedding inspiration. I sat down with Shannon (well, not really we did it via e-mail, but they always say that in interviews so I’m going with it) and asked her some questions about how she ended up in a job she loves.

V:  What is your education/employment background?

S:  When I was in college I was hired at a florist shop to help them with accounting and to keep the books. Literally, keep the books. I had to enter charges on cards using a typewriter and write out the ledgers. Even in the late 80's that was an old-school way to do the accounting. When I was done pounding on the typewriter and I had used up all the White Out, I would work in the front of the shop helping with the flowers. Once I realized I wanted to be a florist I kind of left college behind and started down the path of learning as much as I could about floral design.

V:  Is being a florist something you’ve always wanted to do?

S:  When I was a kid my aunt was a florist. I was fascinated with her job. Then in my teen years I read a book about a girl how worked at a florist and it stuck with me. So when I got the job at the flower shop in later years it just all clicked into place and I knew floral design was what I wanted to do.

V:  How did you get into this field?

S:  I opened my first shop with a business partner in 1994. The shop was a gallery that featured local artists/flower shop specializing in artistic designs. I was soooo green (see what I did there?)! It really was a case of trail by fire. I just kind of jumped in and figured things out. I had no idea, beyond some basic design skills, what I was doing. But I learned! When I had the boys, I sold the business and stepped away from flowers for a few years. When I got back into working with flowers I knew I wanted to focus on weddings and events and I opened Flourish.

V:  What made you decide to finally go for it and start your own business?

S:  Looking back on it, I don't really think I gave it a lot of thought. When the opportunity presented itself to open the flower shop, I just went for it. When I started the business I was young enough that I had never gotten used to a fat corporate paycheck. So starting the business didn't hurt too much in the way of a pay cut. A new business can be a major time suck too. But I didn't have children at the time and my husband was, and always has been, supportive of my endeavors. I guess I was so young and inexperienced I didn't really know I was taking a huge risk. Maybe I was really brave. That's it. I was brave!

V:  What is your favorite part of your job?

S:  Meeting with a bride for the first time and knowing that I am clicking with them and totally get their vision. I love when I can be creative and my client is excited about the ideas that I present to them. It makes the whole process a more about a creative partnership.

V:  What’s the hardest part of your job?

S:  Working with unrealistic budgets. It is awful when a bride wants the moon and doesn't understand why I can't give it to them and then treats me like I am gouging her and I am the bad guy. I am always happy to work with a budget but the bride has to be willing to meet me half way. I am not a miracle worker and I am not running a non-profit business. Respect my time and talent and I will work my hardest to make your wedding as pretty as your budget will allow.

{Side Note from V:  I had a pretty measly flower budget and Shannon was amazing about it. She worked with me and my flowers were exactly what I wanted!}

V:  What does a typical day for you look like?

S:  One of the coolest thing about my job is it is ever changing. During the wedding season (mid-April through mid-November) the flowers come in on Wednesday we process them and make sure we have everything we need to make the event happen. Thursday and Friday are the designing days and delivery on Saturday. I also meet with brides, order flowers, organize rental décor, and a million other things during the week.  During the "off" season I spend a lot of time blogging, marketing, networking, and all the things I do not have time for when we are in the middle of production. I also develop craft projects for the spray paint company, Design Master. It is really fun to be creative in a way that does not involve flowers.

V: Tell me more about Fancy Pants Weddings!

S: I started the blog Fancy Pants Weddings as a way for me to share some of the things I have learned over the years about weddings. Offering advice, DIY crafts, and featuring real weddings has been a lot of fun. We are in the middle of a complete overhaul and re-brand that is slated to reveal mid-January. I am really looking forward to all the new projects and information we are about to share with our readers.

S:  What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into your field?

V:  Learn what you can where ever you can. If you are lucky, find a special event floral designer that will hire you to process flowers and deliver weddings. Then soak up everything that happens before and during the events and LEARN! Look into the Floral Design Institute in Portland and Seattle. They have a solid program for someone just starting to learn floral design. Once you have practiced and learned the basics see if you can find a family member or friend that will let you do their wedding flowers. Close your eyes, hold your breath, and JUMP.

Thank you so much Shannon for letting me interview you and for your amazing advice.  And, well, for just being awesome!  Check out Flourish here , Fancy Pants Weddings here , and enjoy some beautiful pictures of Shannon’s work below!

NaBloPoMo Day 4 - Some Stuff

I have a blog post all ready that I actually put a good amount of work into and I left it at work.  Whoops.

So...instead....ummm...

Here is some stuff...

I have been way too interested in the goings on at the National Zoo lately.  Like the panda cam?  I mean really, that little bugger is cute.  And the tiger cubs took a swimming test today and it was adorable.

And oh man, if you have a job in social media and ever get frustrated, just read the comments on the National Zoo's facebook...you'll find your job MUCH less stressful.  Their fans be crazy.

I recently caught myself adding a bunch of leggings to my Amazon wishlist.  Because I guess I'm just resigned to being too fat for normal pants.  But seriously, they're so cute and comfy.

My best friend's wedding pictures came back yesterday and they are dreamy and beautiful and oh man, she should just walk around the world day in and day out dressed like a bride because she is drop dead perfect gorgeous as one.

I totally print-screen stole this photo from the photographer's website. Because I'm ghetto. (I'll buy some I swear) BUT SERIOUSLY HOW BEAUTIFUL IS SHE?!  Also, my hair.  My hair rocked.
Okay I'm done.

I ate a bunch of Chinese food for dinner and I'm so bloated that my back hurts.
I did not include a picture with that one.  You're welcome.

Instead of just wearing pants in the winter like a normal person, I've started putting big, cozy sweaters over my spring dresses.  I, without fail, get a comment every single time from one of my coworkers about how cold I'm going to be, but I've stayed pretty toasty, I'm not wearing pants (which I hate to wear), and I look cute so...I'm happy!  I'm calling it Schlumpy Spring.

And finally, FALL!  We have a fall here!  And it's gorgeous!  Holy crap!
(I'm from the desert, this is exciting to me)

NaBloMoPo Day 3 - Airmail Cocktail

A couple of weeks ago, Mike e-mailed me at work to announce that a local coffee shop we had been to a couple of times recently remodeled itself and made it wayyy smaller.

To make room for...

A speakeasy hidden in the back.

We were pretty dern excited about it.  Because, well there aren't really any great bars here and we oh so do love cocktails so very much.

You have to make reservations over the phone to get in and they give you that night's password.  When you arrive at the coffee shop in time for your reservation, you pick up an old fashioned phone in the back and give whoever answers your password. Then the bookcase in the back of the coffee shop swings open and you can walk into the bar. The bar is really cool. It's all dim lighting, candles, period decorations, comfy chairs, and the cocktails are delicious.

My favorite cocktail so far has been the airmail. I'm not sure what recipe they use at our local speakeasy, but I found this one via Imbibe. Enjoy!

(photo via)

1 1/2 oz. añejo rum
3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
1 oz. honey syrup (1 part honey to 1 part water)
1 oz. prosecco
Ice cubes
Tools: shaker, strainer, eyedropper
Glass: coupe
Garnish: eyedropper of Angostura bitters, mint leaf

Combine rum, lime juice, syrup and ice in shaker. Shake vigorously. Strain into glass and top with prosecco. Garnish by dragging mint leaf through bitters to create an attractive design, then laying mint leaf on top.

NaBloPoMo Day 2 - Good Eats

I can't think of anything clever to start this blog post out with...

Here are some super tasty things we have made lately that you should make too.  Enjoy!!

We found our recipe via a tumblr that now seems to be broken, but here is an almost identical recipe.
So taaaasty.

I don't normally like chicken salad sandwiches, but this one isn't mushy at all, it's crunchy, and fresh, and oh so delicious. We've been eating it for days.

GreekTacosBest
Oh man oh man oh man are these good.  That's really all there is to say about it.  These are really damn tasty and if you run out of meat, the veggies make a perfect little salad.

These were realllly tasty.  The only problem was that the damn corn tortillas fall apart in a millisecond. I think it also needs something else as garnish; I just haven't figured out what yet. Something spicy maybe.

What have you guys been cooking lately?

NaBloMoPo

Say that title ten times fast, huh?

So, last night I learned about NaNoWriMo via Twitter which is pretty damn cool for all you talented writers out there. (Laura, you better be writing something!!)

And then this morning I saw a fellow blogger post something about NaBloMoPo. Which I learned is National Blog Posting Month. Which is just a fancy way to say, "Get off your ass and blog about something every day this month, you lazy, boring blogger you."

I kind of needed that semi-rude kick in the pants since my blogging muscles have been atrophying hard for a while now.

Of course I'm late to the game...of course.  So I'll try to catch up!

(And this counts as my November 1st post, neener neener)

If you want to learn more about NaBloMoPo, you can read about it on BlogHer or you can get your daily prompts over at The Daily Post. They also have some pretty great daily photography prompts if that's more your thang.

Get ready to get sick of me this month!
