Style Files - Airplane Attire

I'm getting ready to go on a big trip with my husband and some friends to New Orleans later this week (wahoo!!). I'm having the hardest time figuring out what to wear since it's still freezing here and it's going to be warm there, but probably rainy.

The airplane trip is probably the hardest part since when we leave it will be cold and when we arrive it won't.

My solution is layers, and comfy ones at that. You can't really get more comfortable than slip on shoes, a slouchy tee, and cashmere. Below, I created an outfit that would be perfect for the ride inspired by my new shop obsession Repeat Cashmere who I first stumbled upon on instagram.

What do you like to wear when travelling?

This Sunday Currently

Currently I am...

Reading: Still reading the 4th Outlander book and The Hobbit, need to do more reading now that I'm unemployed, but have been getting through this Outlander book pretty fast lately.

Writing: This blog post and random e-mails

Listening: To the pug snoring next to me, people being noisy outside, and my fingers clacking away on the keyboard.

Thinking: That I am not looking forward to making this red wine braise alone.

Smelling:  The spray I put in my wet hair to keep it from getting damaged when I blow dry it. It smells great, I love it.

Wishing:  For a new job, to weigh ten pounds less, and for the snow to not show up tonight.

Hoping: That I get a good night's sleep for once tonight.

Wearing: Pajama pants with hearts on them that were a gift at my bachelorette party and a grey tank top. i do wear things other than pjs, I swear.

Loving: That I bought two birthday presents for my sismonster today.

Wanting:  To know where I'm going to work, where we're going to live, some kind of solid plan. I hate the unknown! (repeating this from last week...still true!!)

Needing: To get up and start dinner and to blow dry my fuzzy ass hair.

Feeling: Really sad about having to derail a pretty great plan because of stupid life and it's stupid twists and turns.

Clicking:  My old blog posts, been going through from the beginning to do a quality control check for the last two days and it's pretty hilarious to look back on.

A couple other things...

Last Sunday Night Dinner we made Blais' arroz con pollo and HOLY CRAP I don't know how to properly express how delicious this was. If ya'll want the recipe, let me know.

It's friggin' windy here. The bane of all girls with bangs' existence, I tells ya.

Dreaming of Warmer Days and Maxi Dresses

A while back, I pinned a dress on Pinterest that was all over that site:

People were pinning this pretty little thing left and right so I went on a hunt for it and found various versions for around $60-100something on different re-sale sites.

When Rosegal contacted me about doing a product review, I started flipping through their extensive catalog and was super excited to find this:

Not only was it pretty much the same dress, but it was only $17.41! Awesome!

I got this little lovely in the mail the other day and have been dreaming about warmer days ever since, it's just so bright and happy and comfy.

It fits pretty well considering it's a one size fits all dress; it's a little snug in the boobs, but not uncomfortably so. The bottom is pretty see-through so I'll wear a slip with it every time for sure. It was really wrinkly when I got it, but it ironed out fine (Mike ironed it for me of course). Shipping took a while, but that's normal for factory direct sites like Rosegal

I would definitely order from Rosegal again and have been filling up my Pinterest boards with pieces I love from their catalog.

No color manipulation or light editing on this photo, it really is THAT bright. Love it.

Dog Portraits

No seriously, that's what this blog post is about.

We're weirdos.

Mike has been doing some training on our camera and learning new tricks and our dogs are pretty darn cute so here...enjoy some portraits of our furry children.

We let him chew on empty water bottles...it's probably horrible parenting, but he loves it and they're free.

This is quite possibly my favorite picture of all time. That scowl!

Lamb Meatballs Simmered In Creamy Spinach Sauce

I've mentioned on here before that Mike and I started doing Sunday Night Dinners where we make something a little more complicated, rich, or fancy. We make it together, have cocktails or wine, and actually eat it at the dinner table instead of in front of the tv. Recently, we made lamb meatballs simmered in creamy spinach sauce from Padma Lakshmi's coockbook Tangy Tart Hot & Sweet and it was GOOD. My sister has been asking me for the recipe so I figured, if I took the time to type the whole damn thing, I might as well post it for everyone. Enjoy!

Lamb Meatballs Simmered In Creamy Spinach Sauce

For the Meatballs:
1.5 pounds ground lamb
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
.5 cup minced fresh cilantro
.5 to 1 teaspoon cayenne, to taste
1 teaspoon ground coriander seed
1 teaspoon minced garlic
1 cup minced yellow onion
1 teaspoon salt

For the Sauce:
3 tablespoons canola oil, plus extra for greasing hands and pan
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
3 whole dried red chilies
3 cloves
4 star anise pods
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 cup diced yellow onions
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger
2 cups chopped fresh tomatoes
1 teaspoon sambar curry powder (or Madras curry powder)
1 tablespoon tomato paste, dissolved in approximately 4 cups boiling water
.5 cup beef or chicken stock
1 pound fresh spinach, washed and chopped thinly (we only used about .5 pound)
1 cup full-fat yogurt
Salt

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients to make the meatballs, kneading the mixture to a uniform, doughlike consistency.

Rub a few drops of cooking oil into the palms of your hands, so the meat will not stick, and form meatballs about 2 inches in diameter. You will have about 12 to 14 meatballs.

With a bit of oil on a paper towel, rub the inside of a shallow dish to grease it. Place all the meatballs in a single layer, cover them with plastic wrap, and refrigerate them for at least 2 hours.

Remove the meatballs from the fridge and set them on a kitchen counter. To make the sauce, in a large, wide, deep skillet, heat the 3 tablespoons of oil on medium heat. Toss in the cumin, chilies cloves, and star anise. After 2 minutes, or when the seeds and chilies start to color, add the garlic, onions, and ginger, and stir for 5 to 7 minutes, until the onions become glassy. Then add the fresh tomatoes, and stir until they lose their shape. Add the curry powder and stir to mix evenly.

Add the tomato paste water and stock, and continue to stir for 3 to 5 more minutes.

With a serving spoon, gently lay all the meatballs into the sauce, pouring a bit of sauce over them to keep them moist. Add enough boiling water to completely bathe the meatballs, if needed. Cover the casserole with its lid, and reduce the heat to medium low. Simmer the meatballs on low heat for 40 minutes, gently stirring often to make sure they remain bathed in sauce and do not stick to the bottom of the pan. Do not break meatballs.

Reduce the heat to low, add the fresh spinach, and cover the pan. Once the spinach has wilted and reduced, about 4 minutes, lift the lid and slowly add the yogurt while carefully stirring. Once all the yogurt has been mixed in, add salt to taste, about .5 teaspoon or so.

Continue to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes more on very low heat until the yogurt starts to separate a bit.

Serve hot over plain Basmati rice.
